NEW DELHI (Bernama) – Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and top leaders of the Congress on Wednesday paid homage to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 97th birth anniversary, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice president Rahul Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh were among Congress leaders who laid floral tributes at Gandhi’s memorial on the banks of the Yamuna river.
A recorded speech by the late Gandhi was played on the occasion and tri-colour balloons were released by leaders.
In Tamil Nadu, leaders of the state Congress Committee laid floral tributes for the late leader.
Gandhi was born on Nov 19, 1917 in Allahabad and was the country’s first female prime minister.
