NEW DELHI (dpa) – An Italian marine accused of shooting fishermen off India was granted an extension to his medical leave in Italy on Wednesday, lawyers said.
Massimiliano Latorre was allowed to return home from India in September for four months after reportedly suffering a stroke.
A first application for an extension in December was denied.
India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to a three-month leave extension after he underwent heart surgery on January 5, his lawyer KTS Tulsi said.
Latorre and fellow marine Salvatore Girone were arrested in February 2012 on suspicion of shooting to death two fishermen while on anti-piracy duty on an Italian oil tanker.
Legal delays and wrangling over jurisdiction and the marines’ status have soured relations between Rome and New Delhi.
