Tampines Rovers lift Charity Shield

TAMPINES Rovers FC captured their first piece of silverware of the 2013 season with a 2-1 win over Warriors FC to lift the Great Eastern Charity Shield at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore on Friday evening.
The mouth-watering tie pitted last year’s Great Eastern-Yeo’s S-League champions against the RHB Singapore Cup winners.
Both teams started the match cautiously, but in an interesting turn of events, the game exploded into life.
It was the defending S League champions who took the lead through new-signing, Kunihiro Yamashit, the Japanese centre-half finding the back of the net in the 8th minute, before Khairul Amri gave Tampines Rovers FC some breathing space with his strike four minutes later.
Warriors FC refused to let the early goals derail them, and very deservedly, they pulled one back through striker Sufian Anuar in the 55th minute.
However, V. Selvaraj’s side failed to threaten the Tampines goal again, and the Stags held on for the win.
Both sides will now be turning their attention to their opening S League fixtures. Tampines will play Geylang International at the Bedok Stadium on Feb 20, whilst the Warriors travel to Woodlands Wellington the following day.
