Duo convicted for illegal possession of firearms

TWO men were convicted in a judgement yesterday after a lengthy trial in the Magistrate’s Court on illegal possession of rifles. The defendants are facing a penalty of imprisonment not less than five years and not more than 15 years with not less than three strokes and not more than 12 strokes of the cane.
After calling in 23 witnesses, the prosecution, as ruled by Senior Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah Hussain yesterday, had proven beyond the court’s reasonable doubt against Haji Mat Niah bin Haji Duraman and Johari bin Timbang on charges of possession of rifles without licences on December 1, 2007 at the Labi Forest Reserve in Kuala Belait.
Sentencing has been fixed on February 14, 2013.
