KFC and Fitness Zone’s ‘Hopes in the Hoop’ initiative kick-started with its first school tour at the Meragang Sixth Form Centre (PTEM) yesterday afternoon.
The ‘Hopes In The Hoop’ team were welcomed by over 300 students and teachers who jumped at the opportunity to listen to a presentation about recreational game of 3-on-3, before spending some time shooting hoops with ex-PBA player, Erwin Velez, who is currently working with KFC to promote the sport of basketball.
The school were also surprised by the appearance of Brunei-born Taiwanese pop star, Wu Chun. During the visit, Wu Chun shared some of his basketball experiences, and having spent some time on the court with NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, gave the students some invaluable basketball tips.
Jonathan Bong, Senior Marketing Manager of KFC, explained that yesterday’s clinic was a baby step in the direction of the ‘Hopes in the Hoop’ initiative’s end goal.
“As part of our roadmap to see a Brunei team playing for 3-on-3 basketball tournament during the Olympics, we are trying to push for a 3-on-3 interschool basketball tournament to happen in the near future,” said Jonathan during the clinic yesterday.
“For now, we are adopting most of FIBA’s rules so as to prep the participants, hence our slogan for this year being ‘Our Rules, Your Battles, Anyone’s Game’,” added Wu Chun.
Besides doing school visits, the ‘Hopes In The Hoop’ Initiative will see both KFC and Fitness Zone hosting road shows to promote basketball.
The ‘Hopes in the Hoop’ Team has set itself a target of visiting two or three schools across the country each month in their continued efforts to promote basketball via the aforementioned talks and basketball clinics.
