THE KFC Fitness Zone 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge is back and bigger than ever.
After four successful seasons in 2012, KFC and Fitness Zone renewed their partnership and also recruited two new event management companies in Good Game Event Management & Advertising and Trinity Advertising & Event Management to help drive their vision forward.
“This year we have a new team with more experience and dedication to help us bring the game to the next level,” said Jonathan Bong, Senior Marketing Manager of KFC during a press conference at Fitness Zone Kiulap yesterday.
This year’s format will be identical to 2012, and will see four seasons of the tournament played; in March, June, September and December.
The first tournament will be taking place at the backend of March, with a sub activity, in this case the cybergame tournament, running in conjunction with the main 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge.
The renewal of the partnership agreement also sees KFC and Fitness Zone collaborate to start up the ‘Hopes in the Hoop’ initiative.
“With this project, our aim is to work with various organizations to give hope to basketball so that basketball in turn can inspire hopes to others” declared Wu Chun, the Managing Director of Fitness Zone.
With the Federal International Basketball Association (FIBA) pushing to introduce 3-on-3 Basketball into the Summer Olympic Games as early as 2016 or 2020, Jonathan was hopeful that with the ‘Hopes in the Hoop’ initiative, Brunei would be able to send a team of their own to the most prestigious sporting tournament in the world.
“Basketball has always played second fiddle in a football loving nation, but it has a lot of potential to be developed into a fun activity that brings family together, especially 3-on-3, which is easier to pick up,” said the Senior Marketing Manager of KFC.
Part of this initiative will see KFC and Fitness Zone working closely with their event partners to carry out school visits and road shows to promote the game.
“I started basketball when I was young in school, with Michael Jordan as my role model. Partly where I am today comes from many important lessons which I have learnt from basketball, one being to never give up. We hope that by sharing some of these testimonies, others would see basketball in a different way and we hope that they will fall in love with it just as we did” remarked Wu Chun.
As part of the Hopes in the Hoops Initiative, a fraction of the proceeds generated via the sponsors’ contributions, players’ registrations and other revenue from the 3-on-3 Streetball tournaments will go to various charitable causes around Brunei at the end of the year.
Entry forms for the March tournament will be available at all Fitness Zone outlets, as well as the KFC Gadong Central, KFC Airport Mall and KFC Seria outlets starting Feb 8.
