Drogba move to Galatasaray gets Ivory Coast backing
RUSTENBURG, South Africa (dpa) – Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba’s move to Turkish side Galatasaray was welcomed Tuesday by the Ivory Coast national team coach.
Sabri Lamouchi said the move after just six months playing for Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua was good news for the Ivory Coast captain, who is currently with the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
“We in the national team of Ivory Coast… are happy for him. It will be good for him to play at a high level,” Lamouchi said in Rustenburg.
Galatasaray confirmed on their website that Drogba, 34, had agreed an 18-month deal.
Drogba was reported as saying on Twitter: “I am looking forward to playing in the Champions League again.
“The opportunity to play for this great club was an offer that I could not turn down.” Galatasaray are through to the last 16 of the competition, where they face German side Schalke.
Drogba is the second recent high-profile signing by the Turkish side who last week sealed the transfer of Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
