ONE of the most important things that Brunei Darussalam BIMP-EAGA Business Council (BEBC) did ever since taking over the chairmanship was creating the BEBC Strategic Alignment Map, which has now been adopted by all member countries.

The map amongst all serve to get people to be more focussed on what constitutes the BEBC, which acts as the official representative of the private sectors in the BIMP-EAGA region, including West and East Borneo and Greater Sulu-Sulawesi.
This was disclosed by Chairman of Brunei Darussalam BEBC, Pg Yura Kesteria PSN Pg Hj Mohd Yussof at a press conference yesterday at the new BEBC Secretariat Office at the Airport Mall.
The Secretariat Office has been moved during the term of Brunei Darussalam Chairmanship up to 2014 from its former office as an initiative to ease the trade barriers, as well as to make organisations or institutions more effective in terms of structure and at the same time to provide easy communication and better manpower.
“In our first Board of Directors meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan March last year, Permanent Secretary Dato Paduka Lim Jock Hoi also reminded us to do a few things such as taking the Business Council to another level.”
Brunei BEBC was encouraged to disseminate information on what’s going on in BIMP-EAGA, particularly that which benefits the business council members.
The BEBC was also reminded of the need to perform business matching for the private sector and encourage foreign direct investments in the country.
“We were also encouraged to import any technology beneficial to the country’s businesses and to find the right people in BIMP-EAGA, not only for Brunei Darussalam’s sake but also for the other BIMP-EAGA countries.”
Since the transfer of the Secretariat Office to Brunei, the council has also been given the opportunity to brief visiting delegates from China and Malaysia in the next few days. Chinese delegates were interested in Brunei’s Halal industry, to the point where the BEBC received an invitation to Beijing to give a talk on the topic of Halal.
Vice Chairman Hj Abd Saman meanwhile added that the BEBC has also prepared a calendar of activities for 2013, and one of the confirmed collaboration projects is the International Food Exhibition (IFEX).
Asked on fund raising as a whole, the Chairman responded that one of the activities is joining the IFEX, which gives them the opportunity to raise funds in collaboration with the Economic Ministry of the Philippines.
The Secretariat Office will also be a showcase for regional products, and while local SMEs are not levied to any charges, there will be minimal fees charged to local and foreign corporations as well as foreign SMEs.
Pg Yura also noted that previously funds were raised through exhibitions, but starting this year, BEBC will encourage people to do more ‘Business-to-Business’ interactions, both nationally and internationally.
Also in attendance during the press conference were the Vice Chairman 2 Awg Hj Mahmud Hj Daud, and Vice Chairman 3 Thomas Koh.
