VAMPIRE Weekend have completed their third album, which was almost two years in the making.

The ‘A-Punk’ band said they have finished work on the follow up to 2010’s ‘Contra’, which has been almost two years in the making. They simply tweeted: “LP3 complete. May 7.”

The band – Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio – have previously said the record has a darker sound than their first two albums.

Rostam said: “Lyrically it’s a bit spookier at times. It definitely feels more nocturnal than anything we’ve done before. Musically there’s a lot of organic tones. There’s some old sounds that have been around forever, like the sounds that bands in America started with. (It goes) back to the roots of music being recorded or being played in a room by a band.”

Ezra admitted that after initial sessions, the band’s creative process hit a wall.

Explaining how at one point they had three great songs for the as-yet-untitled album, he told NME magazine: “Then the depression sets in. You don’t want to have three great songs and then write nine bad ones. It’s like the bar keeps getting higher and higher and there’s all these moments where you feel like you have no idea what to do. For our third record it’s only getting harder, but that kinda feels like how it should be.” (BANG!)
