Inter-Ministry Sports Festival in May

A TOTAL of nine sporting events will be contested in this year’s Inter-Ministry Sports Festival which will be held from May 4-11. The contested sports are badminton, netball, lawn bowling, futsal, athletics, cycling, petanque, traditional tug-of-war and tenpin bowling.

An expected 269 athletes with coaches as well as technical officers from all 12 ministries will be participating in this year’s festival.

A meeting in preparation of the sports festival was held yesterday at the conference room of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium with representatives of each participating ministries.

Present to chair the meeting was Awang Hj Abdul Malik bin Hj Mohammad, Acting Director of Youth and Sports. Also in attendance was Awang Hj Mohd Zamri bin Dato Paduka Hj Hamdani, Senior Special Duties Officer of Youth and Sports.

Dayang Mariam Ulat, the Head of Sports Section of the Department of Youth and Sports delivered the paper work of the sports festival and highlighted the aims of the event which is to implement the national sport policy especially on ‘Sport For Community’, to further develop sport in line with the development of social, economy and prosperity, to provide opportunity to government officers and staff to work together in all levels and sections through sporting activities as well as to instill the spirit of unity and cooperation among the ministries and departments. It also served to unearth talents among government officers and staff that comprised of youth who has the potential to become national athletes.

All 12 ministries are expected to take part namely Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The sporting events are badminton (team for men and women categories), netball (ladies team which is divided into open and veteran 45 years and above categories), lawn bowling (men and women categories), futsal (Open and veteran 45 and above categories), cycling (individuals and team categories), athletics (men and women categories), petanque (men and women categories), tug-of-war (individual weight of 70kg and combined weight of 1,100kg categories) and tenpin bowling (individual, men and women team categories).

There will also be participation fees for each sports in this year’s sports festival.
