AN AWARENESS on the importance of reading as a culture is the key factor for the success of Vision 2035 that is to create a ‘People who are Well Educated, Highly Skilled and Successful’, Imams said yesterday in the Friday sermon.

By making reading as a practice we could produce a knowledgeable society, especially through national development programmes.

The religious authorities urged the Ummah to take up the practice of reading from time to time, keeping in mind that the only way to get useful and constructive knowledge is through reading and we should make effort to get the right and true sources of knowledge.

Adults should also show a healthy and good example to the younger generation by practising a culture of reading, so that they can help create and reinforce a reading culture among the people in Brunei Darussalam.

Imams added that as Muslims we must make reading a culture that should be practised daily, as it can create knowledgeable human beings who achieve success both in this world and the Hereafter.

Therefore, parents, as the closest persons to children should become role models and show interest in reading.

One can cultivate an interest in reading from childhood, by reading Al-Quran, as well as stories of prophets and companions with exemplary teachings, materials that contain sources of information including newspapers, scientific books and the like. Through reading a person will acquire many virtues and benefits.

Imams concluded by urging Ummah to increase their knowledge and for Allah the Almighty to bestow on us an understanding of the prophets, memorisation of the apostles, inspiration of the angels and also health.
