LAHAD DATU (Bernama) – Fifty-eight illegal immigrants were detained in an integrated operation at Lobang Biawak squatter area in a suburban area of Lahad Datu yesterday.
The operation, which began at 5am, was mounted by enforcement officers from the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) and Lahad Datu District Office.
ESSCom Commander DCP Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said the illegal immigrants, comprising 42 men and 16 women, were detained as they failed to produce any valid identification and travel documents during the operation, in which a total of 196 people were screened.
“All detainees have been handed over to the Immigration Department for deportation purposes,” he said in a statement.
He said the operation was part of the government’s drastic effort to flush out illegal immigrants in Sabah, especially in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone).
The operation was launched following the release of the report by the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Sabah’s illegal immigrants, which was tabled in the meeting of State Security Committee chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
