THE two-week training programme on incorporating Information Commun-ications Technology (ICT) tools to enhance 21st century teaching and making use of new media in teaching and learning processes ended yesterday.
Apichart Phetcharatana, Ambassador of Thailand to Brunei Darussalam, presented certificates to he 23 Southeast Asian participants who signed up for the programme during a ceremony at the SEAMEO VOCTECH Regional Centre.
According to the ambassador, relevant and contemporary experiences must be provided to the learners that will allow them to successfully engage with technology in the right direction.
ICT in education, he added, is becoming more important and will continue to grow, as they will encourage and support independent learning.
Noting that students are constantly using ICT for learning purposes, it is important for teachers need to keep abreast with the current technology, he said.
“As Asean moves towards a single community in 2015, the integration of the people, cultures and economies are worked upon with much being done,” he said, adding that ICT has been acknowledged as a key driver in economic and social transformation and education forms the basis of it all.
According to him, the digital divide will continue to be a challenge in Asean.
In light of this, he said it is important to integrate and harness the resources of the region in order to employ the most cost effective measures to provide affordable ICT access throughout Asean.
The Centre Director of SEAMEO VOCTECH Regional Centre, Hj Md Sharifuddin Hj Md Salleh, meanwhile, highlighted that teachers need to be equipped with common ICT tools that are available today from the various resources available and enhance the aspiration of 21st century learning, as children now are more familiar with technology.
As such, a multi modal information delivery that is relevant to the students’ content of study should be presented by the teachers, he said.
The two-week training programme was designed to utilise current and emerging technology, tools and applications associated with information communications technology to guide educators on the efficient use of these tools in enhancing their teaching and learning activities.
At the end of the training programme, participants were able to apply relevant technology to capture, convert and prepare teaching and learning resources, as well as facilitate learning through an Online Learning Support System and an Online Learning Management System.
