HONG KONG (dpa) – Hong Kong police have recovered 3.6 million of 15 million Hong Kong dollars that fell out of the back door of a transport van, a media report said Thursday.
Passing motorists and pedestrians stopped and helped themselves Wednesday to the mostly 500-Hong-Kong-dollar (65-US-dollar) banknotes that blew around Gloucester Road on Hong Kong Island, the South China Morning Post reported.
Thirteen people have so far come forward and handed in 3.6 million Hong Kong dollars, police said. Officers have appealed for others to do the same.
“If he or she keeps the money for his own use, he may commit an offence of theft which is a very serious crime,” said Superintendent Wan Siu-hong.
Some 35 million Hong Kong dollars fell from the van but 20 million Hong Kong dollars of that was recovered at the scene. Armed police arrived and stopped the cash feeding frenzy.
A door malfunction appears to have been responsible for the cash spillage, the South China Morning Post quoted the G4S security company as saying.
