KOENIGSTEIN, Germany (dpa) – The best thing to do in case of a cold and fever is to stay in bed and rest, the monthly German health magazine Naturarzt (“Naturopath”) advises in its latest issue.
While taking fever-reducing medications may make the sufferer feel better, it said, this often induces him or her not to get sufficient rest.
Running a high temperature is important in fighting off infection, it pointed out.
The magazine also recommended a high intake of fluids to keep mucous membranes moist during the illness. To supply the body with vitamins and secondary plant products – protective chemicals produced by plants, often having medicinal properties for humans – it advised eating plenty of fruit and vegetables.
And to inhibit germs and strengthen the body’s immune system, the magazine said, horseradish and garlic should be part of one’s diet.
