BUKIT Bendera, a quiet area in Tutong Town, has been given its own Hollywood-style sign, becoming the second landmark in the town after Tutong River to get such a signage.
The Bukit Bendera sign, which is in both Roman letters and Jawi located high on the hill near the Tutong District Office, will light up at night with the power coming from solar panels. The Tutong River sign, which was enhanced recently to feature Jawi writing, is located on the riverbank opposite the Tutong Waterfront.
The two signs were officiated by Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Home Affairs, yesterday during his working visit to the district.
The two signs are expected to boost the image of Bukit Bendera and Tutong River as places of interest.
The Tutong District Office decided to construct the signs as part of its efforts to develop areas of historical importance, which have the potential to attract visitors to the district, and also beautify the environment.
There is also a plan to further develop the Bukit Bendera area by setting up a herbal park, fruit and flower garden and an observation tower.
Plans are also in the pipeline to install a variety of decorations in the area surrounding the Tutong River sign to attract visitors.
The area surrounding the signs can also be used by the Mukim Pekan Tutong Consultative Council to hold economic activities that will bring the community together, especially the youth, NGOs, private sector and SMEs.
After officiating the two signs, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin visited areas that are earmarked to be part of the Tutong municipal area, including Kg Serambangun, Kg Sengkarai and Petani, Kg Penabai and Kuala Tutong, Kg Panchor Papan and Kg Panchor Dulit.
Also present during the visit were senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, several members of the Legislative Council and Tutong District Officer, Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali.
