THE Learning and Development Centre of the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, Kuala Belait, yesterday hosted a launching ceremony of ‘Healthy Lifestyle Programme for Senior Citizens’.
The guest of honour was Rostinah binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Sura Pahlawan Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Tahir, the Acting Director of the Community Development Department of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
In a speech, Hajah Kertini binti Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Diraja Abang Haji Abu Hanifah, chairperson of Senior Citizen Health Promotion Support Group (PENYULUH), said the programme is a collaboration between the hospital and PENYULUH to encourage the senior citizens to lead a healthy and active life.
The event also saw the appointment of the new administrative committee comprising Hj Jailani bin Hj Daud, Hj Nordin bin Hj Isa, Hjh Zaleha binti Hj Mokti and Hjh Balqis binti Abdullah. It was followed by a presentation of certificates of appreciation to active members of the centre – Hajah Kertini binti Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Diraja Abang Haji Abu Hanifah, Pg Hj Zainal bin Pg Talip and Terry Thoo.
A talk was also delivered by Dr Muhd Nurhasanuddin bin Kelali, a Geriatric Consultant at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan.
The doctor shared insights on some conditions common among the elderly such as immobility, instability, incontinence and impaired intellect or memory – collectively called Geriatric Giants.
“They may have infection, sickness or any sorts of medical condition and the elderly will not show the same textbook symptoms as younger people. As doctors, we need to look more thoroughly at the causes and get them diagnosed and treated appropriately.
“The elderly should stay active without doing vigorous exercises. They should do simple exercises even if they are in the wheelchair as these simple workouts can help them maintain good health.
“Manpower is still an issue; we still depend on expatriate doctors. We are planning to get local doctors to be assigned to help the elderly.”
The doctor said for now, the senior citizens experiencing Geriatric Giants are being taken care of by geriatric services personnel in RIPAS Hospital. There are plans to expand the services with a new ward.
PENYULUH was established by the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital on November 8, 2012 to support senior citizens so that they have a comfortable life.
