THE Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) for Asean Youth Football Tournament has gained recognition from the Asian Football Confederations (AFC) and the Asean Football Federation (AFF).
This was revealed by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah during a sponsorship appreciation dinner at the Centrepoint Hotel last night.
As both host and organiser, the HBT tournament was a huge success. The success of the HBT garnered attention from official observers from AFC whereby it was said that the organisation of the tournament was excellent and the competing teams were of the highest quality.
The understanding and strong cooperation between all parties involving the higher committees and the working committees were built through working strenuously in carrying out the planning and preparations and finally excellent and effective implementation of the tournament.
“The commitment of those in duty which came from higher committee members, liaison officers, safety officers, volunteers, medal bearers and ball-boys immensely contributed to the success of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy 2014,” the minister added.
“Without the support of fanatical football fans which is mainly reserved for the Brunei Darussalam national team, the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy for Asean Youth Football Tournament would not have been a complete success,” the minister added.
Tens of thousands flocked the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium to deafening roars to declare their support for the Young Wasps.
The sporting spirit such as this elevated the spirit of patriotism and friendship as well as the love for country.
“This is what we hoped for all along through sport which is social cohesion among the community in Brunei Darussalam,” the minister noted.
“With this success, we have moved a step forward in realising the vision of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to make the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy for Asean Youth Football Tournament as a theme that can support towards regional peace and unity and accomplishing another milestone for the world agenda of sports for peace and development,” the minister added.
The minister also paid special praise to the heroes of the Young Wasps and the team’s management and backroom staff for shaping the squad in this year’s tournament.
