HAWA, a local breastfeeding advocate group established with the help of the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, yesterday held the launching of its Breastfeeding Drive at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Kg Labi in Belait District.
The event aims to raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding, as well as inform the people of Labi – especially mothers – about the best way to breastfeed.
The guest of honour was Dayang Surayah binti Hj Mohd Salleh, the Belait District Officer’s spouse.
In a speech delivered by Hjh Masni binti Hj Munir, chairperson of HAWA, she said, “Breastfeeding is vital to ensure a child’s healthy growth and development. In medical terms, breastfeeding is the best way to provide a child with all the vitamins and nutrients they need. This is because the first lactation after the delivery, which is called colostrums, contains nutrients, antibodies and proteins that terminates viruses and protect the child from diseases.”
She explained that breast milk contains nutrition essential for a child’s physical, mental and emotional development.
Breastfeeding also strengthens the bond between the mother and child, she added.
Hjh Masni also mentioned of plans for HAWA to hold a similar event in Mukim Liang and Mukim Belait.
She also revealed that HAWA plans to start managing a Baby Care Centre located in Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait.
Hjh Masni also said that as a start, the centre would be open to children of the hospital’s staff members.
