TOP achievers at Politeknik Brunei were honoured for their educational excellence yesterday at its first Convocation Ceremony for the first and second intake of the Advanced Diploma Programmes.
The award ceremony was held at the Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and awards were presented by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Education.
“Two years have passed in a flash and those challenging days are still clear in my mind. However, with guidance and support from lecturers, I was able to excel in my studies,” said Muhammad Hanif bin Jumat, Advanced Diploma in Computer Network graduate and one of the recipients of the Best Student Award.
He added that he gained a lot from the course and that the institute provided a conducive environment for him to improve his life skills. Activities such as Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam, Entrepreneurship Camps, Financial Management Talks and IET presentations have helped him to grow confident along with improved his time management and leadership skills, all of which will help him gain a competitive edge when applying for jobs.
Mas Hafizah binti Anas, also a recipient of the Best Student Award and a graduate in Advanced Diploma in Business Accounting, thanked her lecturers for helping her.
She appreciated their patience in shaping her into an excellent student. “I believe that my lecturers and family are the driving force behind my success. Without their encouragement, I may not have been able to tackle all the tough assign-ments and complete my studies with the results I have attained.”
She pointed out that every day is a learning process and youth should capitalise when an opportunity presents itself. “Always remember to find balance in life to achieve success the right way,” she added before saying that she wished to be an inspiration to the current students of Politeknik Brunei.
Similarly, accrediting her lecturers for her success was another best student, Sabariah binti Haji Isa, Advanced Diploma in Interior Design graduate, who said, “The reason I chose this course was because I love painting and interior designing, which is something that I am interested in pursuing as a career.”
In addition to learning in the class-room, she said she also participated in a lot of enrichment activities to develop leadership and interpersonal skills as well as self-confidence. “I think I gained a competitive edge over my peers in the job market because I was able to apply the knowledge that I have learned. I am particularly proud that I am now more confident in my ability and am willing to be more proactive in the future.”
Norsyehida binti Mohd Mersidi, a special needs student who graduated with Advanced Diploma in Information Systems & Technology, said that life as a Politeknik Brunei student had not always been as easy as it seemed.
“With heavy academic responsibilities, time management is very important. Even with limited resources at the campus, there is no reason to fall behind,” she said. “I strongly believe that in order to be a well-rounded student, it is necessary to have a balance in studies and activities – both in and outside campus.”
Norsyehida added that success couldn’t be taken for granted and that it had to be earned through hard work.
“Failure is inevitable but what matters most is not giving up; standing up after every fall and striving for improvement and success.
“All the sacrifices and hard work turned me into a competent person. Perseverance finally paid off,” she said.
She also said that despite being a special needs student, she did not have any difficulties communicating with her peers and lecturers.
