ATHLETES from Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Indonesia gathered last weekend at the Multi-purpose Hall of the National Stadium for Battle Royale hosted by GETFIT CrossFit.
Brunei’s first CrossFit affiliate, GETFIT CrossFit hosted 90 athletes from over 10 CrossFit affiliates at Battle Royale 2014. According to a press release, Battle Royale is an annual competition based on CrossFit movements. Much like the CrossFit Asia Regionals, GETFIT CrossFit aim is to provide a platform for crossfitters, athletes and fitness enthusiasts to challenge and test themselves through competition.
The winner of Men’s RX Category was Darren Chai, Fitness Zone, Brunei. The first runner-up was John Cheah, Solitude of Strength, Singapore and second runner-up was Donghee Lee, CrossFit Hub, Singapore.
The winner of Women’s RX Category was Vanessa Fung, Reebok CrossFit MeWellness, Shanghai. In second place was Stephanie Liew, GetFit CrossFit, Brunei and Tricia Tan, CrossFit Hub, Singapore came in third place.
The Team Category was won by Reebok Crossfit 673, Brunei. The first runner-up was Crossfit Senayan, Indonesia and the second runner-up was G6, Brunei.
The winner of Men’s Scaled Category was Justin Ling, GetFit CrossFit, Brunei. In second place was Ikhtiaruddin Iman, CrossFit Hub, Singapore and in third place was Kelvin Tiong, CrossFit Kuching, Malaysia.
Women’s Scaled Category was won by Rachel Lee, Fitness Zone, Brunei. The first runner-up was Amanda Chan, CrossFit Kuching, Malaysia and second runner up was Fiona Abdul Rahman, CrossFit Kuching, Malaysia.
Coach Sekhon, Head Coach, GETFIT CrossFit said the athletes showed a lot of heart and humility in the face of intensity and adversity in attending the Battle Royale. He praised the event’s volunteers for making Battle Royale a success despite it being a first time experience for most of them and they were only given a short notice.
A number of participants also shared their experience at Battle Royale.
“I would like to thank Coach Sekhon, also known as ‘the Boss’ and GETFIT CrossFit for hosting such a well-organised competition,” said Coach Kevin Lim, Battle Royale Head Judge.
Stephanie Liew from GETFIT CrossFit said, “It was definitely not a walk in the park. I had to fight for every rep, every second. I feel like I’ve become a better athlete as a result.”
Tricia Tan from CrossFit Hub, Singapore said, “Battle Royale was a super experience. I genuinely enjoyed the hospitality of the CrossFit community in Brunei, the efficient running of the entire weekend, the great competition, workout programming and all-round great sportsmanship displayed by everyone. I hope Battle Royale gets bigger and more successful with each year. I will definitely be back in 2015.”
Hassnal Sulaiman from Reebok CrossFit 673, Brunei said, “To me, it pushed my comfort-level physically and mentally. The CrossFit community spirit was at its best at Battle Royale.”
