MEMBERS of the Brunei Ladies Golf Association (BLGA) and Tabuan Golfer Club gathered at the Royal Brunei Golf & Country Club to raise funds for the Psychiatric Department at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital to purchase a kiosk for its patients to sell their products, yesterday.
The informal mini charity golfing drive raised $3,200 and attracted as many as 32 golfers. Xavier Prakash Amalraj, Occupational Therapist from RIPAS Hospital in an interview said, “With a kiosk at RIPAS Hospital, we hope our patients can put their handiworks to sell as a source of revenue. It’s also an avenue for patients to interact with the public and prepare for future employment to reduce the stigma against psychiatric patients.
“Besides wood work, the kiosk will also showcase other skills learned from the industrial centre of RIPAS Hospital such as mosaic artwork.
“We want to sell items that are of quality and be on par with the people’s expectations. The project is a good opportunity for the patients to be self-dependent and is expected to start early next year.”
Recalling the fund-raising idea, he explained, “The idea came from a causal discussion with Sharinah Shazali, an attachment student at RIPAS Hospital. Her mother Sarinah Hj Masri, Vice President of the Brunei Ladies Golf Association (BLGA) and Tabuan Golfers Club’s chairman Abdul Hamid Abas then agreed to help.”
Collecting the funds for the kiosk was Dr Hilda Ho, Head of the Psychiatric Department at RIPAS Hospital, who is also Psychiatric consultant.
