THE demand for Taiwan’s sweet and juicy Ponkam (mandarin orange) has exceeded supply in every Chinese New Year celebration. To meet the demands of the local market, an increase of 5,000 boxes of Taiwan Ponkam have been in the country since Friday at Warisan Utama Jaya Emporium & Supermarket at Jalan Muara.
According to Mike Mak of Warisan Utama Jaya Emporium & Supermarket, “last year, the Taiwan Ponkam was sold out because the response was overwhelming. This year we decided to bring in more.”
The Ponkam from Taichung’s Feng Yuan District Farmer’s Association is well-known for its uncompromising quality thanks to the good agricultural practice and the area’s perfect cooling weather.
This year, a total of 13,000 tonnes of Ponkam were harvested. Apart from local consumption, the produce is exported to Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Singapore. Each box of the Ponkam comes with a serial number barcode for consistent quality.
Last year a total of 800 tonnes of Ponkam were exported overseas from Taiwan.
