Jakarta (dpa) – Two French journalists went on trial in Indonesia charged with breaching the conditions of their tourist visas, a news report said Tuesday.
Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat, who work for the Franco-German TV channel Arte, were arrested on August 6 while filming suspected separatist rebels in the town of Wamena in Papua province.
They were arraigned before the district court in the provincial capital Jayapura on Monday, the Jakarta Post reported.
The two could face up to five years in prison if found guilty.
The chief prosecutor, Sukanda, said both defendants had conducted journalistic activities on tourist visas, according to the Post.
“The defendants are fully aware that they are not allowed to use a tourist visa to carry out journalistic activities in Indonesia, but should use a journalistic permit after receiving clearance from the Indonesian government, coordinated by the Foreign Ministry,” the prosecutor was quoted as saying.a
