SEVERAL foreign workers were nabbed by the Immigration enforcement officials for abusing their immigration passes.
Yesterday, 14 personnel inspected three vegetable stalls and one Nasi Katok stall in Mukim Pengkalan Batu and Mukim Gadong.
A man working at the vegetable stall tried to flee but was later caught. He was previously caught and fined last year for illegally working at a vegetable stall in Jln Katok Mata-Mata in Gadong.
Two foreign workers were also issued with special passes and their identity cards and passports detained. Two calling letters were also given to their employers to assist in further investigation.
In another operation involving 14 personnel at two workshops and two restaurants in Mukim Kilanas, seven foreign workers were caught for abusing their immigration passes.
Another foreign worker was also brought to the Immigration for failing to show travel document with valid immigration pass. Six special passes were also issued to seven foreign individuals and four calling letters to four employers for further investigation.
The Immigration enforcement officers urged employers to ensure that their employees’ immigration passes are still valid. It is an offence if the employee is caught working after expiry of his/her immigration pass. Employers were also urged to know the whereabouts of their employees at all times.
If the employee’s immigration pass expired, the person could be deported after serving imprisonment sentence and he/she will also be blacklisted.
Employers were also urged not to harbour foreign workers who are not under their guarantorship and if found guilty, the employer would face legal action.
The Immigration Department reminded employers and foreign workers to adhere to rules and regulations, warning it would continue to conduct random checks. The department added that it welcomes public tip-off on immigration violations and that information would be kept confidential. The public can contact its hotline at 8753888 or 8734888.
