A FLOTSAM of logs of wood and garbage halted river transportation services in Temburong yesterday after the recent heavy rainfall caused strong currents and led to a rise in water levels.
River cleanup works were carried out by personnel from Operation ‘G’ branch of the Temburong Fire and Rescue Department and the Public Works Department.
They faced difficulty in dispersing and cutting through the big wooden logs which were blocking the river. Clearing the buildup will take some time as the strong currents are constantly bringing in more rubbish.
The unsafe conditions led to the disruption of speedboat services since early yesterday morning.
Poeple who wanted to go to Bandar Seri Begawan had to cancel their journey for safety reasons, including tourists who were forced to spend the night in Bangar.
The Marine Department confirmed that the condition of the river was unsafe for speedboats and advised boat transportation companies to take appropriate action for the safety of their boats and importantly the passengers.
The effects of high tide have also been felt in several areas including Kampong Batang Duri. Residents living in low-lying areas and near the river have been put on alert for flash floods.
Speedboat services will resume after the rubbish is cleared and the waterway deemed safe for travel.
