IN THE spirit of patriotism, the Tutong District Office organised a flag-hoisting ceremony to mark the upcoming 31st National Day celebration at the Tutong Civic Centre, yesterday.
Present to witness the symbolic act of love for the country was Tutong District Officer, Wardi bin Hj Mohammad Ali together with Mukim Penghulus and village heads from the district.
After customary prayers, the ceremony began with the flag bearers marching in a formation from the road towards the venue, accompanied by members of the Four-Wheel Drive Vehicle Association, ‘KEKAL’ Motorcycle Association, Bicycle Group ‘BEST’ and representatives from the Tutong District Youth Association.
The ceremony proceeded with the official handing over of the national flag from the district officer to personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Force to be hoisted. This was accompanied by the singing of the national anthem by choir members as the flag was raised.
Choir members from the district office together with students from Muda Hashim Secondary School and Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School enlivened the ceremony with a patriotic performance of the song ‘Bendera Negara’.
The district officer then proceeded to distribute the national flags to the village heads.
To conclude the ceremony, choir members performed the ‘Berkibarlah Bendera’ (The Waving Flag) and ‘Misi Merdeka’ (Mission of Independence).
On January 1, 1984, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam read the proclamation of full independence ending 95 years of British protection for the Sultanate.
