FIVE foreign men were detained yesterday after a surprise immigration operation was carried out in the Brunei capital ahead of the 31st National Day celebration in Bandar Seri Begawan on February 23, 2015.
The operation was conducted to check the validity of the immigration passes of foreign workers, the Immigration and National Registration Department said in a statement.
Thirty-two officials conducted the operation from 9am and 10.45am at a multi-storey car park and a commercial building, which are known to be popular hangouts for foreign nationals.
Initially 58 foreign workers, including three women, were taken to the department for investigation after they failed to show documents which have valid immigration passes, the department said.
After the investigation, five of them were detained at the police station in Bandar Seri Begawan for further investigation.
The department said the public can provide information regarding immigration offences by contacting the hotlines 8734888 and 8753888, assuring that the names of informants and their information will be kept strictly confidential.
