THE Turkish Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Oguz Ates, yesterday held a farewell reception for Sri Munawwarah binti Haji Awang Lamat, who was recently awarded a scholarship under the Turkiye Burslari Scholarship programme to study Islamic Theology in Marmara University in Turkey.
The farewell reception was held at the Turkish Ambassador’s residence in Kg Madang.
Just out of her ‘A’ level, Sri Munawwarah learned about the scholarship programme through a Malaysian scholar. The 18-year-old submitted her application for the Islamic Studies programme earlier this year. And she made it.
In an interview with the Bulletin, Ambassador Ates expressed his intention to further promote and encourage the local community to follow Sri Munawwarah’s footsteps, and to consider the Turkish Scholarship Programme as part of their journey towards higher education.
Ates also noted that with the Turkish Consulate just settling down in the Sultanate and the embassy due to open soon, Sri Munawwarah’s farewell reception also marks the beginning of a new era in educational cooperation between Brunei and Turkey which can help boost bilateral ties between the two countries.
Scheduled to leave on Sept 24, Sri Munawwarah will undergo a total of six years of education. Asked on her feeling about leaving home for a very long time at her age, she exuded confidence and said, “I’m very interested in venturing into this as it should give me a better insight on the cultures of a fellow Muslim country.”
