TAWAU (Bernama) – Fire destroyed a row of 10 double storey wooden shophouses in Dunlop Street here, Monday night.
Tawau Fire and Rescue chief Rudy Fredzek said the premises destroyed in the 11.45pm fire include jewellery shops, textile shops and a watch shop.
“Three fire engines with 38 firemen rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control at 1am,” he said when contacted by Bernama here, yesterday.
Causes of the fire and the losses were still being investigated. Harmawati Mokhtar, 30, a cashier of a petrol kiosk nearby said she heard shouts of fire from members of the public at 11.45 pm.
“On seeing the fire, we closed for business. We are grateful to the firemen who prevented the fire from spreading,” she added.
