KUALA LUMPUR (dpa) – A woman doctor is among the Malaysian extremists fighting with the Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, police said.
The 26-year-old physician is married to a Malaysian man who is a member of the militant group, according to state-run Bernama news agency.
It quoted police counter-terrorism official Ayub Khan Mydin as saying the doctor was very active in social media trying to recruit Malaysian women to join the extremists.
Another police official said the doctor uses the name “Shams” on her Facebook account: “A Diary of Muhajirah”, which chronicles her life as a militant crusader.
“She also has another account in another social networking site tumblr.com,” the officer told dpa. “Her accounts are among more than a dozen accounts in different social media sites that we are monitoring.”
Nearly 100 Malaysians are estimated to have joined various extremists groups fighting in Iraq and Syria, including Islamic State.
