IT’S high time we made some improvements to our systems to make cross border travel more convenient.
I am listing out a few suggestions, which most of my countrymen, I am sure, will agree as they too experience these bottlenecks.
- We should have passports with 100 pages, just like Malaysians. This will benefit especially those who travel frequently, particularly those in the travel and sales industry.
- We have good relations with our neighbours, hence the land borders should remain open 24 hours a day. People should be able to cross at anytime.
With the border open 24/7, they can travel anytime, especially if they have an emergency in Limbang, Lawas or Miri that they have to attend to.
Imagine how you would feel when you have an emergency but can’t cross the border and by the time you reach, it’s too late.
Nowadays there are many cargo trucks and trailers moving from towns in Sabah to Sarawak. By keeping the border control posts open will facilitate the movement of goods.
Passenger buses can also move from Sabah to Kalimantan, Indonesia in the night. Isn’t this connectivity Asean is talking about? Facilitate cross-border travel to enhance connectivity.
- Petrol stations should remain open 24 hours a day.
From Muara to KB is a distance of 90 miles but along the highway there are no petrol stations.
Every 10 miles there should be one petrol station, meaning along the coastal highway nine petrol stations that can be run by local bumiputera.
They should be complete with well-functioning toilets, franchises like KFC, Burger King, small retail shops, maybe a seaside motel with a few rooms and resting places for drivers of trailers, buses and vans.
These are the type of amenities people take for granted on highways elsewhere in Thailand, UK, USA and Australia, to name a few. We may not be a big country, but we should upgrade to meet international standards.
Trade and travel to Malaysia and Indonesia is a 24-hour business and we should facilitate this and ensure Brunei Darussalam has a 24-hour mindset, which investors will appreciate.
