A LOCAL man charged with rape and robbery of a Taiwanese teacher was produced in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was ordered to assist in further investigations while in police custody.
The 22-year-old Bruneian, Yurawandy bin Bujang, is charged with robbing two of the expat teachers and is charged with raping one of them.
No plea was taken from the defendant and Senior Magistrate, Haji Nabil Daraina, said the defendant is innocent until proven guilty, either by his own admission or after a trial.
The defendant indicated he is not hiring a lawyer in his defence.
No bail was allowed by the court as the prosecution mentioned that the defendant faces serious charges and he is also believed to be involved in a case of auto theft which is linked to this case.
This case has drawn much attention from Taiwanese officials whose representatives based in Brunei were seen listening to the proceedings while seated in the public gallery.
Both victims returned home after physical examinations were conducted on them.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Hajah Rozaimah Rahman, also informed the magistrate that police will need the assistance of the victims in the investigation, which will require the involvement of Taiwanese officials.
So far, in the two weeks since the case was brought to court, police are still waiting for DNA results to be provided by the Department of Scientific Services and fingerprints results from experts as well as the need to identify stolen items.
Police have already recovered stolen items and the alleged weapons used in the robbery.
A gynaecology report has already been obtained and all statements have been recorded.
The senior magistrate fixed the case for further mention on October 28.
Yurawandy faces a charge of rape of the 21-year-old Taiwanese teacher and causing hurt during the early hours of September 27 at the Chung Hwa Primary School teacher’s hostel in Tutong.
Two other charges allege him of robbing the two teachers’ gadgets and money and causing harm.
The defendant is facing penalties for each of the theft charges, imprisonment of a maximum of 30 years with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
The penalty for the rape charge is an imprisonment of not less than eight years and not more than 30 years jail with no less than 12 strokes.
