WELL-educated and determined to prove their mettle, young Bruneians are no longer shying away from the stringent selection process and tough training involved with the military.
A military career represents a chance to serve and defend the nation’s honour and sovereignty, as well as serving His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
For young Bruneians, especially scholarship recipients, this is a perfect gesture of appreciation for the free education and healthcare provided to them.
This year, a total of 57 candidates out of 130 applicants made it through the stringent initial selection process, which is an increase from the previous year.
The candidates will have to go through further assessments on their suitability before they can begin their training as officer cadets at the prestigious Officer Cadet School in Sungai Akar Camp.
Qurattu’ Aini Qayyimah binti Dr Al-Haj Zelzy, a graduate from Manchester University with MRes (Criminology and Legal Research), said she has been interested in joining the military from a young age after listening to inspirational stories from people.
She believes that the experience she gained during her studies is well suited for a military career.
She also believes that joining the military is a good way to pay back the government for providing her a scholarship, and that serving His Majesty the Sultan would be an honour.
She said she hopes to become a naval officer.
Fatin Nur Hanani binti Hamdani – who studied Professional Communication and Media at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) – said a military career would give her a chance to prove to herself that she is capable of achieving success as a military officer.
She hopes to be able to contribute to the nation’s security and help the nation achieve its Vision 2035.
Adi Rusydi bin Omar, a network engineering graduate, believes that outstanding leadership and a good personality are paramount to being a military officer.
He said it was his childhood dream to be a military, adding that the level of discipline a military personnel exudes is also among the feats that attracted him to join the military.
