TWO local men were sentenced to jail after they pleaded guilty in the Intermediate Court to trespassing and auto theft. Mohammad Fazly bin Asnan, 20, received 26 months imprisonment while Mohammad Abdul Syafi’ie bin Abdul Latiff, 19, got 24 months imprisonment.
Judge Haji Abdullah Soefri Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin upheld a custodial sentence to have a deterrent effect on the defendants and others, whilst stressing the need to protect public property.
DPP Dayangku Hazirah Pengiran Yusof’s facts of the case stated that on the first count, the defendants stole a car at a convenience store in Kampong Serasa when the owner had gone to buy some stuffs leaving the engine running, at about noon on January 28, 2015.
On the second count, the defendants stole another car whose owner had gone to a convenience store at Jalan Pasir Berakas before noon on January 31, 2015. The car’s engine was also left running and the defendants just drove it away.
The third count stated that the defendants stole a car, left unlocked with keys still in its ignition, while the owner went to withdraw money from a nearby ATM at the Scouts Building, Beribi at about 9.30am of May 14, 2014.
