THE Intermediate Court will soon pass sentence on two local men recently convicted in a human smuggling trial, as it considers a fitting punishment after having heard mitigations from the defence and submissions by the prosecution in supporting sentencing.
Defense Counsel Rozaiman Rahman who represented Sanawadi Sanadin and Esmidiade bin Bujang, suggested in court that his clients were not hardened criminals but were merely trying to earn a living by operating an unlicensed taxi.
DPP Raafe Ibrahim mentioned a previous case in which a starting point of five years’ jail sentence was imposed on a similar conviction.
Judge Pg Hjh Hanani binti Pg Hj Metussain will pass sentence on January 24, and yesterday extended both defendants’ bail.
Counsel Rozaiman held that his clients deserve to be out on bail, even after a conviction, because they had cooperated throughout and have attended court dates promptly.
