BRUNEI DPMM FC will bring down the curtains to their title-eluding season in Singapore with the chance of at least securing third place in the RHB Singapore Cup when they take on Tampines Rovers FC at the Jalan Besar Stadium tonight.
The 3rd place match will not be the showpiece at a stadium where DPMM FC experienced mixed fortunes in recent times.
Talks of achieving the treble dominated the press conference in the aftermath of the Singapore League Cup triumph last July but their joy turned into despair only months after at the same ground following a final-day defeat that ultimately sent the title to Warriors FC.
Balestier Khalsa and Home United had their pre-final rehearsal during their S League concluding fixture and it was the Protectors that had the upper hand coming in with a hardly-fought 1-0 victory. Defending champions Home will be gunning to win the competition for a record- breaking seventh time this Friday.
It is uncertain what squad DPMM FC’s head coach Steve Kean will feature in their last trip of the season to Singapore amid fresh scenes of Jozef Kaplan putting their title aspirations in serious jeopardy and Miljan Mrdakovic hammering the final nail of the coffin.
DPMM FC’s fifth defeat against the Stags in seven matches helped Warriors FC’s cause to steal the march though a draw would have been enough to pip the Singapore League Cup winners to the league title.
Having said that, the ‘Gegar Gegar’ men have a chance to end the victory drought with nothing to play but pride.
DPMM FC reached the semi-finals of the Singapore Cup for the first time this year and regardless of the score will be their best ever result in the cup competition.
