Belgrade (dpa) – Dozens of migrants were injured Tuesday when the overloaded van they were riding in crashed in southern Serbia, state television RTS reported.
Five of the estimated 40 people in the vehicle were critically injured. One of the migrants told RTS that the group was travelling to Europe to seek an asylum. A police spokesman said investigators were trying to determine the exact number of people in the van and why it swerved off the road on a straight stretch of highway near Leskovac, some 300 kilometres south of Belgrade.
With EU-member Hungary bordering it to the north, Serbia is on a main route for undocumented migrants trying to reach Western Europe from the Middle East and Africa. In recent months, tens of thousands of Kosovo Albanians have sought to illegally reach Hungary via Serbia and enter the passport-free Schengen Area.
