BERLIN (dpa) – Borussia Dortmund slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Werder Bremen Saturday and could go into the Bundesliga winter break in last place.
Bremen lifted themselves off the bottom with goals in each half from Davie Selke and Fin Bartels before Dortmund defender Mats Hummels scored with a header.
Bremen move to 17 points while Dortmund drop to second last on 15 points after their 10th league defeat of the season and could be overtaken by Freiburg (14) who are at home to Hanover on Sunday.
Dortmund will be in a relegation place going the winter break for the first time in 30 years.
“The only good news is that the first half of the season is over,” Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.
“We now have nearly three weeks of preparation which we will use intensively and will come back looking completely different.”
Bayer Leverkusen drew 1-1 with visiting Eintracht Frankfurt to move third on 28 points.
Borussia Moenchengladbach slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Augsburg, lowly SV Hamburg earned a point in a goalless draw at Schalke, and VfB Stuttgart and Paderborn were also goalless.
Bayern Munich lead the table on 45 points, 14 ahead of Wolfsburg who greet Cologne in Saturday evening’s game.
Leverkusen in third place are followed by Moenchengladbach, Schalke and Augsburg on 27, with Frankfurt seventh on 23.
In Bremen, 19-year-old striker Davie Selke put the home side ahead after just three minutes when he ran onto a pass from Santiago Garcia and curled the ball past keeper Mitch Langerak.
Selke then set up the second goal in the 62nd minute with a run and low cross from the right met by Bartels.
Dortmund responded seven minutes later when Hummels dived to head home Ilkay Guendogan’s corner, but Bremen came closest to a third goal when a Bartels’ effort in the 89th minute came back off the inside of the post and both Selke and Clemens Fritz had chances.
