HIGH education and noble personality are the criteria when it comes to assuming responsible positions in society.
This was highlighted by Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Wahab bin Juned, during the closing ceremony of the Brunei Darussalam Civic Village Programme for Overseas Students.
The programme was held to provide overseas students with the latest information on the affairs of the country and its government while inculcating the spirit of nationhood based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy philosophy.
The deputy minister highlighted that regardless of a person’s education attainment, if he or she had bad personality with no integrity, society would not trust that individual.
By nature, one would love his own country, but that patriotism might be tarnished by negative influences, he added.
“These cases have happened before, and may repeat, making our own citizens turn their backs on their country,” he said. “This is the difference between a truly patriotic person and a person who can disappear as if there is no connection with the country – this is why the love towards the country is the main noble personality.
“It is important for us to train ourselves not to be self-centred and see ourselves as the best out there,” he said. “We must always remind ourselves of our Bruneian identity – a noble personality based on the philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy.
“This brings about progressive, harmonious and peaceful life.
Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Wahab advised students to reject chaos, personalities that can weaken them and not to be manipulated by irresponsible people.
“Instead, they should humble themselves before Allah the Almighty, abide by the law, respect the elders and our leader, and stay united.”
The ceremony was held at the official residence of Tutong District Office. Also present were Tutong District Officer, Awang Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali; Acting Director of Information, Awang Mawardi bin Haji Mohammad; and senior officers from the Department of Information and Tutong District Office, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs.
