INDIAN Association of Belait (IAB) recently held The Deepavali Nite 2017, at the Ballroom of Pusat Insani, Seria, for the local Indian community to celebrate the festival.
The Deepavali Nite 2017 drew more than 600 individuals from across the country.
Present at the event as the guest of honour was Nagma M Mallick, High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam. She was welcomed by K Salim ‘Salimo’ B Karim, President of IAB.
Also present were Hajah Siti Norezah, Acting Assistant Belait District Officer; and Loo Soon Nin, Chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Belait District.
The celebration started with the singing of the national anthem and then a Doa Selamat. A short speech was then given by Sanjay Mishra, the Vice-President of IAB; followed by another speech by President of IAB.
In his speech, the president of IAB noted the importance of the Deepavali celebration as a means “to get together, to express our love and friendliness to others and to express our happiness in the form of cultural programmes”. He also expressed his gratitude towards the supporters of IAB for making the event possible. He noted that celebrating the festival is an opportunity to continue the cultural legacy to the youths.
After a short performance, Nagma M Mallick gave a brief speech, “We are fortunate to be able to reside in an abode of peace, Brunei Darussalam, and in addition to celebrating Deepavali, this year also saw the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.
“The celebration represents an important link between the two cultures, and to further strengthen that bond, various events and activities are planned to be held in the near future.”
A small memento was presented to the guest of honour following her speech, which was handed by the President of IAB.
