THE law enforcement branch of the Royal Customs and Excise Department on Saturday seized 1,811 cartons of cigarettes, which are believed to have been smuggled into the country, at a rented house in Jln Kebangsaan Lama.
The cartons of cigarettes stored in boxes were found in the living room as well as below the staircase. The rented house is believed to be used as a storage for cigarettes to be supplied to customers.
Two suspects who were at the house, however, managed to escape the Customs enforcement officers in a car. The officers tried their best to stop the getaway vehicle but in vain.
The seizure of the contraband was as a result of a long period of observation and monitoring by the Customs officers.
In connection with the case, the Royal Customs and Excise Department has conveyed its appreciation to the members of the public for providing information and asked them to continue their support in reporting any smuggling activities by contacting the Customs hotline 8714422 or 2382422.
