CUSTOMS personnel apprehended a cigarette smuggler after a dramatic car chase on Monday night.
The suspect, a foreigner in his 40s, fled Kubur Rangas Jetty in his vehicle after noticing the Customs officers conducting inspections.
In his haste to shake off the pursuit, the suspect hit a Customs officer’s car near the Royal Regalia.
The officers managed to nab the suspect when he tried to escape on foot.
A total of 235 cartons of cigarettes were found in the suspect’s vehicle.
The man will be charged under the Excise Order 2006.
The Royal Customs and Excise Department urged members of the public to report any smuggling activities or the selling of any prohibited goods by contacting the Customs hotline 8714422 and 2382422.
