PERSONNEL from the Law Enforcement branch of the Royal Customs and Excise Department yesterday foiled a smuggling attempt by local men.
The men tried to smuggle in contraband items into the country via Brunei waters through Sungai Putat using a racing type water-taxi at about 6.20pm.
According to customs personnel, they managed to track the targeted boat while it made a stop under the Kg Setia School area in the water-village, during which they raided the boat.
The boat driver and its passenger managed to escape by diving into the river. Customs personnel found 627 cartons of cigarettes of various types, 21 cans of beer, 20 bottles of beer and 2 bottles of vodka upon inspection.
A local man who is believed to be the owner of the boat was detained for investigation.
The arrest was made following surveillance by the personnel from the Law Enforcement branch of the Royal Customs and Excise Department.
The department appreciated the public for the information given and urged other to continue providing support by making immediate reports on any smuggling activities to the customs hotline at 8714422 and 2382422.
