HIS Royal Highness Prince General Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, the General of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces consented to officially open the 11th Brunei International Shooting Skill at Arms Meet (BISAM) yesterday at Binturan Shooting Range Complex, Penanjong Garrison, Tutong.
The 11th BISAM, which will take place from January 20 to 31, is an international shooting event that brings together some of the finest marksmen from different countries.
The Ministry of Defence said the event provides an opportunity to improve self-confidence and shooting skills as well as overall professional development of all participants. The international event also provides an important platform to maintain and enhance friendly relations between respective countries and armed forces.
The 11th BISAM participants are from Australia, the Kingdom of Cambodia, the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Republic of the Philippines, the Kingdom of Thailand, the Republic of Singapore, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Sultanate of Oman, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Brunei Darussalam ‘A’ and ‘B’, Royal Brunei Police Force complete the list.
Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, said that since its inception in 1985, BISAM had seen an increase in participation and support from other countries.
He said BISAM was initiated with the main objective of providing opportunities for the international professional shooters to show-case their skills and potential. He believes BISAM provides these shooters an avenue to achieve victories in a healthy, competitive atmosphere.
The Commander of RBAF said BISAM also provides a platform for each contingent to strengthen ties and foster the spirit of friendship and comradeship.
At the opening event yesterday, upon arrival, His Royal Highness was welcomed by Deputy Minister of Defence, Dato Paduka Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat, and Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah.
His Royal Highness later consented to meet and greet the contingent commanders of participating teams and had a group photo session with senior officers of the Ministry of Defence and RBAF, Defence Advisors and members of all contingents.
His Royal Highness then proceeded to the Briefing Room at the STATS Centre to hear welcoming remarks by the Commander of RBAF, followed by a briefing by the Chairman of 11th BISAM, Lt Col Hasmee bin Haji Abdul Wahab.
His Royal Highness was later invited to the royal dais to receive a royal salute led by Lt Col Azman bin Haji Bangkol, Parade Commander for the opening ceremony of 11th BISAM.
Soon after the general salute, the BISAM Sultan Cup was handed over by Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) Contingent Commander to 11th BISAM Chief Jury, Lt Col Haji Mohd Norfahsin bin Haji Abdul Karim.
His Royal Highness consented to declare the official opening of 11th BISAM, which was followed by fireworks and colourful smoke at the shooting field and hoisting of flags of the 16 participating countries.
After the recitation of a Doa, His Royal Highness visited the Chief Range Executives Officer’s office, Medical Centre and Statistics Centre.
His Royal Highness later went to the 350-metre Point Gallery 1 Range where His Royal Highness was invited to participate in the VVIP Pistol Novelty Shooting Competition.
Before leaving the Binturan Shooting Range, His Royal Highness presented prizes to the winners of the VVIP Pistol Novelty Competition at Gallery 1 Range Officer’s Mess.
His Royal Highness received a pesambah and signed a Royal Parchment.
