Washington (dpa) – A spokeswoman for a Republican congressman resigned Monday after she was decried for remarks on social media about President Barack Obama’s two teenage daughters, US media reported. Elizabeth Lauten confirmed to the Washington Post she had resigned.
She had drawn fire online over the weekend after remarks on her Facebook page about the Obama girls’ appearance and attitude at a Thanksgiving event at the White House Wednesday. Thousands of people had signed an online petition demanding she be fired.
“Dear Sasha and Malia, I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class,” Lauten wrote. “Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you.
Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.” Sasha and Malia Obama appeared bored and unhappy to attend the annual pardoning of the White House turkey with their father.
