THE Counselling and Supervision Services of the Prisons Department and Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Committee jointly organised a workshop on creative writing for ‘Friends under Supervision’.
Held at the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, the programme was aimed at helping inmates get back to the society and become useful and responsible, according to Hj Ismail bin Hj Murat, Acting Director of Prisons.
Without support, the friends under supervision would encounter upheavals especially in a challenging life that is full of obstacles.
On behalf of the Prisons Department management, Hj Ismail thanked the Mosque Affairs Department and Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Committee who have supported the programme.
The Prisons Department urged more agencies to put together such integration programmes.
Meanwhile, Senior Prisons Counsellor Pg Omar bin Pg Hj Othman said the workshop was among the programmes planned to integrate the friends under supervision with the community. Since the establishment of the Counselling and Supervision Services on January 30 this year, many programmes have been successfully implemented with the cooperation of various parties.
These include their involvement in the cleaning of a room in Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, participation in Korban ceremonies, Islamic New Year campaign in several mosques and flower planting activity at Kg Mentiri Mosque.
One friend under supervision was engaged to work with Kg Mulaut mosque committee, while several others are working at cooperative shop in Kg Jerudong.
Some are still waiting to work under cleaning services company.
“Friends under supervision should be patient and never lose hope.
“They should be brave and strive to work hard and change. They should forget the past and build a new life.,” he said, urging them to work hard and be successful in life especially in education and avoid being involved in social ills.
Touching on the importance of integrating friends under supervision with the society, the Counselling and Supervision Services will offer job opportunities in car wash and grass cutting services.
The department will also cooperate with the Prisons Department Cooperative, private sectors and individuals.
Six friends under supervision and 16 mosque youths took part in the workshop held separately four times this month.
The workshop facilitators were Hj Jawawi bin Hj Ahmad, Southeast Asia (SEA) Write Award recipient in Thailand back in 2004 and Hj Mariat bin Hj Abdullah, a former teacher who is still actively involved at Advanced Education Division of the Technical Education Department.
