KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – The government needs the support of people of all levels of society to check extremist activities as they can harm the security and harmony.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said yesterday, activities of the Islamic State (IS) militant group cannot be taken lightly and must be checked.
“Until today, 39 Malaysians from various backgrounds have been arrested for their involvement and support of the IS activities.
“These events may occur in Syria but then if they happen here, our racial harmony, national security and the economy will be destroyed,” he said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had presented a white paper in parliament on the threat of the IS group while an Act will be enacted next year to check terrorism from spreading.
Opening the annual meeting of Federation of Foochow Associations Malaysia, yesterday, Wee said the enterprising nature of the Foochow community spurred them to succeed in life.
