NATIONAL basketball coach Nomar Angeles Isla is looking to an improved performance from the Brunei ladies team in the upcoming Borneo City Basketball Cup 2014 and is targeting a podium finish for the team.
Coach Nomar in an interview yesterday at the training said: “The ladies team will be finishing with a better result than last year. I know that they can make it into the medal tally this year.”
“The team has really come together not only as one unit but also as a family. They are highly committed and train very hard together,” Nomar added.
After the Borneo Cup, he hoped to push for the setting up of an official ladies national team that will have its own national training programme.
The national coach currently has his hands full by coaching not only the men’s national team but also the ladies as well as the veteran team.
“Coaching all three teams is my service to Brunei Darussalam but my priority is the men’s national team,” he said.
Meanwhile, the preparation for the Borneo City Basketball Cup to be held from Oct 24-26 is boosted with the support of Fitness Zone in providing its facilities for the Brunei teams.
Fitness Zone Health Club’s managing director, Wu Chun, has given his full support by providing his establishment’s facilities for the young and talented men squad to use for their extra basketball drill and fitness training sessions.
According to Wu Chun: “Basketball is a game of movement and is a very physical demanding sport. Effective basketball players work extremely hard to develop the type of muscle strength needed to build up the endurance and stamina. As such, i am hoping our Fitness Zone certified instructors can assist the national team not only to compete at a higher level but also to win championship and make Brunei proud.”
The national squads this year are made up of several Fitness Zone members and staffs, including Rachael Lee who will be playing for the ladies team.
