TAWAU (Bernama) – All teachers in Sabah must always control their emotions and feelings when confronted with problems of student discipline, said state Education Minister Datuk Jame Alip.
He said a teacher needed to be patient, loving and not easily swayed by anger when dealing with such situations.
“A teacher has to understand the background and character of the pupils concerned whether at the primary or secondary school level. We should not be swayed by our feelings until it causes hurt to them.” he told reporters after officiating at the closing of the state level 2015 Teachers’ Guidance and Counselling Seminar.
He was asked to comment on a report in a local newspaper that a teacher in a district was alleged to have acted viciously, causing hurt to an eight-year-old pupil in that school. According to the news report, the victim alleged the incident occurred last week after the teacher concerned was said to be angry with him.
Jame said he had met with the teacher concerned and discussed the problem with him. “So far we are still awaiting the police report and will act accordingly once it is obtained.” he said.
He also urged headmasters, principals and counselling teachers in the state to play a role in guiding their colleagues so that they adhered to the correct platform when faced with problems involving their students.
